Watch for Interactions

Though CBD seems to cause few side effects, cannabis or CBD does interact with some drugs. So it’s important that you and your veterinarian be alert to any changes in your pet. Like many medications, cannabinoids are metabolized through the liver, so combining CBD with other drugs may enhance the effects of those pharmaceuticals.

“We do see the strength of pharmaceuticals increase when dogs are taking CBD, so we can often taper down some of those pharmaceuticals. “For example, CBD often potentiates the effects of antiseizure medications, which is why a lot of times when we combine those with cannabis, we get better control.”

Currently, there has been no formal study on how CBD affects dogs. What scientists do know is that cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral nervous systems, which help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state.

Talk With Your Vet

If you live in a state that has legalized CBD, there’s nothing to stop you from giving it to your pet on your own. But experts say it’s a good idea to talk with your vet before. While veterinarians can’t bring it up themselves, they can certainly answer questions you have in an effort to reduce any potential harm to your pet.

A separate study from Cornell found that 2 mg per 2.2 LBS of CBD twice daily “can help increase comfort and activity” in dogs with osteoarthritis.

According to Dr. Klein a Veterinarian, CBD is used because of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact, and for possible anti-cancer benefits, although there’s no conclusive data on this use.

Why buy CBD as a liquid for your pet? You can buy treats containing CBD, but the best method is to administer an oil tincture to the treats they are already accustomed to. This way you can adjust the dose for your pet drop by drop.

Listen to your body and your needs. Adjust the serving size, frequency and strength of CBD you use to achieve your desired results.
